Welcome to this small spanish community located on the westernmost point of the Pyrenees and full with contrasts where you will find, within a straight line shorter than 100 kilometres, the Irati forest calling the atmosphere of a Nordic fairy tale to mind, as well as the clayey dried up plains of the Bardenas Reales, which seem to have been brought out from the sub-Saharian space. Navarre covers a territory of 10,421 km2 and it is made up of three major regions – The Mountain, The Middle Zone and The Riverside Zone – with different bioclimatic features. Architecture, agriculture and livestock, gastronomy and folklore change according to the gradual transition in the landscape. These mutations make Navarre be a motley and surprising mosaic. |

Navarra (Navarre) land of wines spanish wines
The varied geographical lie of the land and the existence of vineyards in areas which are clearly differentiated because of their climate and soil give the wines of this ancient kingdom a unique personality. All of them together, each one contributing its best qualities, enables one to obtain that final result which bears the "Appellation d' origine" of Navarre. In Navarra (navarre), grapes varieties such as Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet, Mazuelo between the red ones and Viura and chardonnay among the white ones are cultivated. A balanced mixture of these varieties allow to mantain, year after year, that peculiar style characteristic of our wines and a high degree of quality. The red wines can be consumed when young but their elaboration in oak casks and, subsequently, in bottles give them new peculiarities every year. The best vintages should reach the table with all the ritual of great wines and should be tasted with the repose of the occassions indicated. The
rosés, proceeding from varieties fo red grapes, and elaborated with
the traditional Navarro method of "Sangrado" after the
must remained very few hours in contact with the grape skins, is the
clearest proof and reflection of the unique nature of wines of
Navarra (Navarre). Wines which are drunk cool and which have the
ligthness and the smoothness of velvet. Map of the kingdom of Pamplona until Sancho el Mayor |

The appellation d'origen of Navarra In 1958, the "Appellation d'origen" of Navarra (Navarre) was created in response to the wish of the vinegrowers of Navarra to group themselves in a body which would guarantee and watch over the quality of the wines of this area. Altogether, the "Appellation" groups 17.000 hectares of vineyards and round about 8000 vinegrowers. The productions so protected total an annual average of 60 million litres. As the controlling body of this "Appellation" the Governing council was set up, of which the vinegrowers producers of wines, merchants and Public Administration form part. Its task is to follow up the practises involved in the cultivation of the wine and to watch over the correct elaboration and marketing of the wines, guaranteeing the quality of them. All those wines which have passed these quality controls bear a counterlabel with the map of the "Appellation d'origen" and the corresponding number. These are the reasons why the wines of Navarra are achieving such notable success on a continuous basis in all markets, satisfying the most demanding consumers. |
